The Nuts Blind Box draws inspiration from the iconic Mondrian Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow, advocating abstraction and simplicity. This design is emblematic of the natural force and spirit of pursuing inherent beauty. By utilizing essential ordinary elements, the Nuts Blind Box reveals the power of mystery and elucidates the aesthetic thought of neoplasticism through modeling, balance, color, social psychology, and artistic psychology.
What sets the Nuts Blind Box apart is its integration of the Mondrian composition into the outer box graphic. The well-coordinated lines and primary colors create a visually striking design that seamlessly blends with the simulative brown kraft paper color. This subtle integration brings the product attributes to end consumers in an imperceptible way, conveying the message of balanced and healthy nutrition from mixed nuts.
The inner box of the Nuts Blind Box maintains the same color schemes as the outer box. However, it takes the interactive experience to the next level with the addition of cartoon character illustrations. Through a fun take-out and role-play game, the Nuts Blind Box enhances the entertaining interaction between the consumer and the packaging, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience.
The Nuts Blind Box is made using food contact grade white board for all paper materials. The inner automatic lifting mechanism is created using 300gsm CKB and elastic string with suitable tenacity to meet functional requirements. To protect the ink and ensure durability, the mechanism is coated with a water-based high abrasion matte varnish. Additionally, the Nuts Blind Box is printed using food-grade soy ink, ensuring safety and quality.
With specifications of 106 x 83 x 110 mm for the outer box and 49.5 x 35 x 50 mm for the top and bottom inner boxes, the Nuts Blind Box is designed to be compact yet functional. The left inner box measures 49.5 x 35 x 53 mm, providing ample space for the nuts while maintaining the overall aesthetic appeal.
The Nuts Blind Box is the result of a collaborative effort by the Stora Enso China Packaging design team. Led by Innovation and Design Director Dick To, the team includes Senior Design Manager Jinglun Cui, Structure Manager Honglai Gong, Graphic Manager Hong Zheng, Graphic Designer Xiaoli Cui, Structure Designer Simei Liu, and Animation Production by Cheng Yang.
Operating the Nuts Blind Box is simple and intuitive. After tearing off the tearing line and opening the cover plate, consumers can pull out the inner box through the open hole using the finger hole. The inner automatic lifting mechanism pushes the other inner boxes to the open hole one by one, allowing all the boxes to be pulled out. This setup creates the perfect opportunity for a role-play game through permutations, combinations, and twisting, adding an interesting and interactive element to the overall experience.
The Nuts Blind Box project started in June 2020 and was launched in April 2021 in Beijing, China. The design team faced various challenges, including realizing the automatic lifting mechanism and coordinating the role-play game element with the inner boxes. However, through their creativity and technical expertise, they were able to overcome these challenges and create a truly unique and engaging packaging design.
The Nuts Blind Box has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Packaging Design in 2022. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. The Nuts Blind Box is esteemed for incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
The Nuts Blind Box is not only a visually appealing packaging design but also a testament to the power of art, design, and interactivity. It successfully combines the elements of surprise, entertainment, and functionality, creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for consumers.
